Following a night of temperatures in the low teens, water main breaks at two downtown locations could adversely impact traffic for two big sporting events at the University of New Mexico this weekend. Crews from the Bernalillo County Water Authority have been working since early this morning to repair two breaks — one at University Boulevard NE south of Avenida Cesar Chavez between the Pit arena and University Football Station, where there is standing water in the road. As of 12:05 p.m. the broken water main had been shut off .Traffic for the New Mexico Bowl tonight will be impacted and those going to the game are urged to seek alternative routes. Eastbound Avenida Cesar Chavez or southbound University Boulevard are recommended. Facilities at University Stadium will be operational.Northbound University Boulevard from Sunshine Terrace Avenue will be reduced to one lane through Monday Dec. 19. Traffic delays should also be expected for those going to the Iona-UNM men’s basketball game on Sunday afternoon.The other water main break is between Mesa Vista Road and Lomas Avenue, and water service is expected to resume for those affected. However, lane restrictions will be in effect this weekend while repairs continue.
