    HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – The Connecticut Department of Public Health upgraded its guidance for local school athletic events. (Photo provided by MGN) The announcement was made Wednesday night. Due to the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, state health officials now require all athletes, coaches, and officials wear face coverings at indoor sporting events, regardless of their vaccination status. The changed guidance  went into effect on Thursday. Initially, the DPH recently made the decision to allow fully vaccinated athletes the option to not wear a mask during indoor sports competitions; given the the Omicron variant and the uptick in COVID-19 cases however, the guidance was changed.     Masks required for indoor sports and activities

    NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – High school athletes participating in indoor sports and other activities will have to do so with a face mask on. However, masks are only recommended for outdoor sports and activities. The New Mexico Activities Association is following the lead of the PED and governor’s office.     Student athletes, coaches required to wear masks for indoor sports

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) announced Thursday that masks will be required for any indoor activities for students and coaches this fall. For fall sports, that could include indoor practices but also volleyball and cheerleading. The decision was made after Education Commissioner Jeff Riley officially placed a mask mandate for public schools on Wednesday.     DOH: Masks not required for outdoor sports this fall

    The fall preps preseason is just around the corner, and as teams gather to get ready for what will hopefully be a full season of action, the state has released its COVID-19 guidance for athletics. The good news is that guidelines are far more relaxed for many sports, especially outdoor ones, than they were in February, when last year’s shortened high school sports season began. Football, soccer and cross country coaches can breathe a sigh of relief as masks will not be required for outdoor sports.
