Water authority repairing Kittanning Run outlet pipe | News, Sports, Jobs

Mirror photo by William Kibler / Workers from Allison Park Contractors in Gibsonia, along with Altoona Water Authority employees, repair the leaky outlet pipe at the Kittanning Point Reservoir on Friday morning. A contractor for the Altoona Water Authority is fixing a leaky outlet pipe that allowed contaminated Kittanning Run to leak into the Kittanning Point Reservoir near Horseshoe Curve. Normally, the contaminated water bypasses Kittanning Point and two reservoirs downstream. To address the problem until repairs could be made, authority workers lowered the reservoir to create “holding” capacity, authority General Manager Mark Perry said. This prevented the acid mine drainage water from flowing immediately out…

Submitted photo A Dunkirk Department of Public Works crew works on a water main. The DPW recently installed 12 isolation valves around the city, to keep main breaks from compromising the entire system. Dunkirk has completed installation of water main isolation valves, authorized after a rupture shut the flow off to the entire city. According to Department of Public Works Director Randy Woodbury, the valves have already averted some more major problems. Woodbury offered a report on the issue to the city Common Council earlier this month. “Most recently, a hydrant and its old shut-off valve were found to be bad on Willowbrook Avenue, and the…

Fredonia turns down water, sewer hikes | News, Sports, Jobs

Fredonia’s water and sewer rates are staying the same — for now. Village trustees defeated proposals to raise both rates by $1 per 1,000 gallons of use during a Monday night meeting. Trustee David Bird, author of the proposals, was joined by Nicole Siracuse in voting for them. Trustees Jon Espersen, James Lynden and Michelle Twichell voted “no.” Espersen proved to be the swing vote. He was open to, but wary about, the plan in previous discussions about it. He said village officials ought to look at and discuss the results of a new study before making any big decisions about the water system. In fact, prior to…

Submitted photo The Fredonia Fire Department has purchased this new breathing equipment with a grant. On Friday, Nov. 18, the Fredonia Fire Department put its new Scott X3 Pro SCBA air packs into service. The decision to go with this newest technology from Scott was concluded after an in-depth technical review and field evaluation through the joint effort of both career staff and volunteer members. The acquisition of the 27 units, accompanied by spare cylinders and face-pieces, was possible through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant of $253,000 from FEMA. The teamwork of the volunteer fire companies made this purchase a reality, through the public’s generous donations…

Pomfret gets big grant for water project | News, Sports, Jobs

Pomfret is getting a grant of up to $5 million from the state for Phase 2 of its water project. Town Supervisor Dan Pacos announced the grant at Wednesday’s Town Board meeting. Pacos said the town was notified Friday and received the state’s acceptance letter Tuesday. “That’s the lion’s share of the $8 million (cost) for Phase II,” Pacos said. Deputy Town Supervisor Ann Eckman wanted to thank the town’s consultants, Municipal Solutions and Clark Patterson Lee, for their efforts in doing the grant. “We pushed them very hard to get the grant in by the deadline,” she said. The grant was issued by the state Environmental Facilities…
