Indoor professional soccer headed to Grand Rapids
Louis Stephens pointed out that there is plenty of buzz surrounding the sport of soccer considering the 2022 World Cup is coming up later this fall in Qatar. Stephens is helping make there’s buzz closer to home in Grand Rapids, too. Stephens and Joe Brefczynski have co-founded the Rapid City Football Club, which will be based in Grand Rapids and participate in the new Major League Indoor Soccer. Indoor turf – in fact any sort of indoor activities center that can be used year-round – is a trend that’s late coming to Grand Forks. A number of regional cities and entities have understood the importance of indoor facilities, not only as a place for local athletes to practice but also as a destination for wintertime activities. Sioux Falls, S.D., is a good example. That community has a number of indoor facilities available for use during the cold months. US Open 2021 women’s final: Emma Raducanu wins first career Grand Slam in magical run to final as qualifier
In the first US Open final between two unseeded players, 18-year-old Emma Raducanu took home her first Grand Slam championship when she defeated 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam, also doing so in just the second Grand Slam tournament of her career. With the victory, Raducanu became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977. Wade was also the last British woman to win the US Open, back in 1968.
