PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There may soon be more cheering from the stands at indoor high school and youth sports events in New Jersey as the governor allows a limited number of parents to watch their kids play.
They’ve been kept out by the pandemic, but Gov. Phil Murphy is now allowing parents to watch indoor high school and youth sports.
Only two parents or guardians per athlete are allowed, up to 35{066dbc63777e5ed549f406789d72fdeebd77a32711d57f7b38ff2b35c4ba2a42} of a room’s capacity to a maximum of 150 people. No other spectators are allowed.
The governor said the order is effective immediately, but it’s up to individual school districts when to begin allowing parents in.
“I know many parents, especially those of our senior athletes, have been anxious to get back into the stands to cheer on their student athletes in what may, for many, be their final season of competition,” he said.
Murphy also announced that with the help of FEMA, community-based vaccination centers will be opening, starting next week, in communities hard-hit by COVID-19. He didn’t release the full list, but said Vineland would be one of the sites.
“These sites will be closed sites of distribution for the immediate community only,” he added.
Appointments will be necessary.
The governor said the actual location of the sites would not be released until it is closer to their opening dates.
