PEMBROKE — A new sports complex in Pembroke called City Arena has brought indoor practice opportunities to an area that desperately needed them, its owners say.
The facility at 706 Washington St. houses two mini turf fields and two concrete fields that can be used for any sport, but are primarily soccer-focused during the complex’s first two weeks of opening.
“The idea is to give kids another avenue to train,” said Peter Umbrianna, one of the facility’s three owners. “It’s so tough over the winters.”
Umbrianna, of Easton, said indoor sports facilities are at a premium with the number of young athletes who play sports and practice year-round. Umbrianna was Scituate High School’s athletic director until the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The facility has cameras to tape practices and a media room for teams to study tape or have classroom time. The complex also has a workout room.
City Arena was converted from an old warehouse that once stored windows and doors.
“It was quite the project transforming it,” said co-owner Rob Williams, of Norwell.
The complex is intended for athletes of any age, and the owners said groups have come in with kids as young as 18 months old.
It will serve as the home base for the club soccer team Mass City Football Club.
