Georgetown’s Sandhill Fields building indoor sports facility

Georgetown’s Sandhill Fields building indoor sports facility

Sandhill Fields, the eight-field sports park that opened in Georgetown last year, is planning to build the first public indoor sports facility in Sussex County.

“All of our kids, during the wintertime, if they want to go practice, say field hockey or lacrosse or soccer or whatever, they have to go to Maryland or Pennsylvania,” said Joe Schell, president of the nonprofit that runs Sandhill Fields. “They’re driving and sacrificing a lot of time and they’re having lunch there, not in Georgetown.”

Schell will ask the Sussex County Council to provide some of the $5.5 million in funding needed for the fieldhouse at their Nov. 30 meeting.

The fieldhouse is planned to be built on Sandhill Fields' 60-acre property in Georgetown.

The building will be 300 feet long, 140 feet wide and 60 feet high, lighted and temperature-controlled.

It’s planned to be built just north of the roundabout within Sandhill Fields’ 60-acre property, along with an 1,800-square-foot “support building” with a reception area, restrooms and mechanical rooms.

Schell said he and other Sussex Sports Center Foundation stakeholders are still deciding between a metal or a framed fabric exterior.

Like Sandhill Fields’ outdoor facilities, the fieldhouse will primarily be used for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and pickleball. The size will allow for one artificial turf field for youth soccer and lacrosse and one spot court for youth field hockey.

The fieldhouse may also be used for basketball, volleyball and events for less than 1,000 people, such as graduations, church services and fundraisers.
