Bridgeland-Klein Cain football game to air on national TV

Bridgeland and Klein Cain are taking center stage for their 2021 opener.

The Bears and Hurricanes will clash at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Klein Memorial Stadium, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Bridgeland finished 12-1 overall and 7-0 in District 16-6A last season. The Bears, coached by David Raffield, ultimately lost to Rockwall-Heath in the Region II-6A Division II semifinals.

Klein Cain, coached by James Clancy, finished 8-3 overall and 5-1 in District 15-6A last year. The Hurricanes came up short against Westfield in the Region II-6A Division I area round.

Bridgeland and Klein Cain faced each other in a thriller to open the 2020 season. The Bears prevailed with a 49-42 victory at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium in a game that totaled 1,168 yards of offense.

Bridgeland quarterback Conner Weigman passed for 372 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team to the victory. He also rushed for 149 yards and three scores.

The 2021 matchup is part of ESPN’s seven-game lineup for its GEICO High School Kickoff series. The slate begins Thursday, Aug. 26, with perennial Texas powers Southlake Carroll (No. 3 in Class 6A) and Highland Park (No. 4 in Class 5A) battling at AT&T Stadium. Milton will travel to face North Cobb in a matchup of top programs from Georgia in the Friday night marquee.

The Saturday slate includes Bridgeland vs. Klein Cain; St. Frances Academy (Md.) vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.); Oakland (Tenn.) vs. Madison Ridgeland (Miss.); and Pace Academy (Ga.) vs. Raburn County (Ga.). IMG Academy (Fla.) will take on Bishop Sycamore (Ohio) at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton in the Sunday afternoon finale.

The seven games will feature 37 players in the ESPN 300 and ESPN Junior 300 national rankings. Weigman, a senior Texas A&M commit, is one of two ranked players from the Bridgeland-Klein Cain matchup, coming in at No. 36. Klein Cain senior wide receiver Matthew Golden, a dynamic TCU pledge, comes in at No. 257.

IMG Academy has the most ranked players with 10 in the 2021 class and 10 for 2022.
