Opinion | China is coming for American video games

Fans of video games should pay heed to the fate of big Hollywood studios — which first ceded creative control to Chinese censors in pursuit of box-office gold and then found themselves floundering when China largely closed its borders to Hollywood products — as China’s government-allied businesses acquire a larger stake in the global gaming industry. It makes sense that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its business affiliates would set their sights on video games. The overall size of the gaming market dwarfs that of the global box office. The largest player in this space is Tencent, “the world’s biggest game company.” The company’s first big purchase was Riot…

C.O. sports plans changing ‘day to day,’ based on air quality; Friday night football up in the air

(Update: Adding video, comments from Bend-La Pine athletic director, MBSEF) BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The air quality in Central Oregon this week, hurt by smoke from the Cedar Creek Fire, has not been favorable for outdoor sports. Dave Williams, athletic director at Caldera high school and Bend-La Pine Schools overall, admits its been a tough daily adjustment.  “It’s really day to day,” Williams said Wednesday. “We’ve developed indoor practice schedules for all of our teams, which gets really tight in our indoor spaces.” Williams said that on Monday, all sports had to practice inside. G-Shock and Awe: Analog Sports Watch Receives Luxury Update

Home » Technology » G-Shock and Awe: Analog Sports Watch Receives Luxury Update Ooh la la! Meet ‘Full Metal’ G-Shock, the watch that will make you look like an exec on the trail, but still do what you need it to do while you’re there. Executed with a heavy-duty but still elegant stainless case, bezel, and band, the new Casio G-Shock GMB2100 scans as both tough and showy. Athletes know the foundational sports watch line for its functionality and rugged appeal. And the GMB2100 Full Metal appears to double down on both. (Photo/Casio) The main components in the case and the band are all, in fact, metal, and carefully designed…

TV Q&A: Why do local TV news anchors sometimes read the sports report?

Q: Why do Channels 4 and 11 have their news anchors deliver the full sports reports from time to time? I was a sportscaster for WBRZ-TV, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, from 1981-93. Back in our day, sportscasters never did news, and news anchors and reporters never did sports. It was a matter of maintaining credibility. Our news director insisted that sports guys do sports, news people do news and the two never intersect. He believed that a station would lose credibility if the two combined, and I agreed with him then and agree even more these days. We both know the issue is money. I guarantee you the…
