Not all water plants make a splash | News, Sports, Jobs

I recently stayed at a friend’s cabin perched just above a small lake in an area that defines “the middle of nowhere.” Much of the weekend centered around water activities — swimming, kayaking, fishing, and more. And much of the weekend conversation centered around the plants in the lake. Because, to access the open water, one first had to navigate through thick mats of long-stemmed aquatic plants. I was curious about what plants were actually there. What were their names? How did they survive? Were they invasive, introduced to this habitat intentionally or unintentionally and then multiplied? Because I had the time and the motivation, I laid belly-down…

Patriots rookie QB Mac Jones excites fans in first NFL preseason game against Washington

The New England Patriots’ prospective franchise quarterback Mac Jones received his first NFL action on Thursday in a 22-13 preseason victory against the Washington Football Team. He was inserted into the lineup with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter, and even picked up a first down before the opening stanza came to a close. After a handoff to Sony Michel on first down of Jones’ first drive, the rookie found an open Jakobi Meyers streaking across the middle of the field. Jones threw it low, however, and it was ruled an incompletion — cancelling what would have been about a 15-yard pickup. On the ensuing third-and-5 play, Jones found Kristian Wilkerson…

2021 looks like the Year of the Horsemen | Sports

Can you believe it’s August, and we’re talking about high school football? As we continue to unwind from our pandemic year, it feels like we should champion every milepost along the way. And seeing football players, unmasked, on football fields felt as normal as normal can be now (alas, we won’t be saying that for the indoor sports, but that’s for another day). So, as we prepare for an actual football season for the first time in two years, it’s time to throw some red meat for everyone to feast upon, with games less than three weeks away (yeah, last year’s “spring” season was the equivalent of my driver’s license…

For the first time since 2011, the Cummings High School football team defeated Williams High School on a football field Friday night. Afterwards, a handful of current Cavaliers players dedicated the victory to Connell Graham, one of the Air Cavs founders, who passed away…
