14 Tri-Lakes teams win Scholar-Athlete awards | News, Sports, Jobs


The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) has announced its spring 2021 scholar-athlete teams and individuals. This is the 29th year the NYSPHSAA has conducted the Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan, Inc. and the American Dairy Association North East.

For spring 2021, NYSPHSAA recognized 2,513 Scholar-Athlete teams and 34,486 individuals. A total of 501 schools across the state participated in the Scholar-Athlete program which honors schools each of the seasons there is interscholastic competition.

To receive team recognition with a certificate, the team’s average GPA for 75% of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90. Only students with a 90 or above will receive pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation.

The Tri-Lakes region consisting of Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake high schools saw 14 teams and 135 students earn the Scholar-Athlete award.

The Scholar-Athlete teams for Saranac Lake include: Baseball, Softball, Boys Outdoor Track/Field, Girls Outdoor Track/Field, Girls Lacrosse (Sara-Placid) and Unified Basketball.

The Scholar-Athlete teams for Lake Placid include: Softball, Boys Outdoor Track/Field, Girls Outdoor Track/Field, Girls Lacrosse (Sara-Placid) and Boys Golf.

The Scholar-Athlete teams for Tupper Lake include: Softball and Girls Outdoor Track/Field.

“I want to congratulate the Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals that have been honored for the spring 2021 season,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director in a press release. “To have over 34,000 scholar-athletes recognized for the hard work they put into their academics shows the kind of dedicated student-athletes we have here in New York State.”
